27 Feb Legacy Business Solutions on How Focusing on One Task at a Time Keeps You Engaged
Despite what many busy professionals might think, multitasking does not lead to heightened productivity. In fact, research has indicated that only about 2% of the population is capable of multitasking effectively. For the vast majority of workers, attempting to do several things at once only leads to mediocre results and a decreased attention span in the long run. We at Legacy Business Solutions believe that focusing on one task at a time is the ideal way to be fully engaged at work, and we’re not alone in that belief.
Last year, HR consulting firm The Energy Project surveyed over 20,000 workers with help from Harvard Business School and found that professionals who refrain from multitasking aren’t just more productive – they also feel more content in their jobs. Respondents who said they were allowed to focus on one task at a time reported being 50% more engaged at work than those who were forced to spread their attention among multiple tasks.
In the survey, The Energy Project measured engagement by asking respondents how passionate they were about their work and how involved they felt they were in their company’s larger missions. While the study offered encouraging findings about the value of focusing on one thing at a time, only about 20% of the 20,000-plus workers surveyed said that they actually had the luxury of doing so. Unfortunately, far too many workers are required to turn in watered-down work through multitasking, and they feel less valued by their companies in the process.
While we certainly understand that we operate in a fast-paced and competitive business world, we at Legacy Business Solutions believe wholeheartedly in the value of focusing on one task at a time.
