20 Feb Legacy Business Solutions Explains How to Overcome Procrastination
Not much good can come from procrastination. Your work won’t be any better by putting it off. In fact, research has found that doing so will likely reduce the quality of the work you produce. In other words, there’s no better time to accomplish what you need to do than right now. Here are a couple of the lessons we at Legacy Business Solutions have recently learned about procrastination – and how to overcome it:
It’s About Habits (Not Willpower): Many people mistakenly assume that if they just had more willpower, they wouldn’t put things off so much. However, we only use our reserves of willpower to do a handful of things each day. Far more – to the tune of 40% – are the results of our habits. If we turn our responsibilities into automated activities, like brushing our teeth, we will be much more likely to accomplish them.
Develop a Starting Ritual: Usually, the problem with motivating ourselves to do things lies in actually getting started. Once we do this, we build the momentum we need to continue. Therefore, it’s that act of beginning that should be habitualized. This can actually be kind of fun if it’s connected to an enjoyable ritual. For instance, you might commit to getting started on a daunting project, or some menial task, or anything else, once you’ve viewed a funny animal video or perused social media for a few minutes.
These lessons are invaluable, but there’s one other point our team members at Legacy Business Solutions would like to make about overcoming procrastination: rewards help! If you promise yourself some chocolate once you’ve completed your work, for instance, you might be more inclined to push forward. Of course, the reward itself can be anything from reading a book to enjoying some gourmet coffee. Whatever floats your boat!
